SPRING BRANCH – Honey Creek State Natural Area, previously open by guided access only, is welcoming visitors at the new trailhead in the southwestern portion of the park starting August 8.

This trailhead opening is part of a multi-phase development for the SNA, with the Public Use Plan informing what will take place in future phases.

The trailhead provides access to 3.5 miles of hiking trail for the public to enjoy the southwest portion of the park, with access hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Access to the trailhead is by reservation only through the TPWD website, through the call center, and a QR code on-site. The entrance to the trailhead is off Park Road 31, with gate codes being provided to those with reservations through their confirmation email. Trail maps are available online or in person at the adjacent Guadalupe River State Park’s headquarters.

Visitors should bring plenty of water for their time on the trails as there is no public water refill station available. A restroom is available at the trailhead.

The new hiking trails explore the oak savannah that serves as the watershed of Honey Creek. To view the beauty of Honey Creek itself, join a guided hike offered weekly from Guadalupe River SP. Additionally, guided hikes exploring other aspects of the State Natural Area are available as listed on the SNA’s events page.

Honey Creek SNA is a part of the Guadalupe River SP complex, with the land for the SNA being acquired partially from the Texas Nature Conservancy in 1985 and the rest from a private individual in 1988 before the final parcel was added in 2023. Honey Creek opened for limited access in 1985.

The Public Use Plan, which encompasses the entirety of the SNA, was presented to those who attended the July 22 and 23 public meetings in Bulverde and New Braunfels, respectively. The post-meeting questionnaire regarding the plan is open until August 21 in both English and Spanish.
